The Machinery we’ve Invested In

Posted

This year we’re proud to be celebrating 25 years on STS, and what a quarter of a century it has been! As we’ve expanded and grown, we’ve continued to operate as a family business, keeping our culture and principles at the centre of what we do. This is something that we value deeply as a business.

It’s not only about maintaining a culture and a strong work ethic though. Investing has always been an important part of our business model. We never stand still and always take the opportunity to drive the business forward. Whether that’s building a new factory and continuing to expand it as production increases, or investing in the great people and the best equipment to make their processes as seamless as possible. Here are some of our best machinery investments of 2024.

Tube / Pipe Bender

Tube Pipe Bender helping improve efficiency at STS

Tube / Pipe Bender

Our original pipe bender was one of the first pieces of equipment we purchased over twenty-four years ago. Back then there were just two employees, our founders Colin and Kathi.

This CNC machine is used to bend parts such as handles and footbars and is a vital piece of machinery for manufacturing some of our premium products such as our Drum Trolleys, Drum Cradles and Cylinder Trolleys.

When we decided that it was time to invest in replacing our existing pipe bender, we went for this one as it’s proven to produce a smoother bend and it’s important to us that we produce the highest possible quality barrel lifting equipment.

It’s also faster, easier to program and operate, and more reliable. Better processes and less downtime? For us, it ticked all the boxes.

Vibratory Polishing Machines

A new finisher machine at STS

Vibratory Polishing Machines

These are some great pieces of equipment and they play a significant role in ensuring the quality finish of the stainless steel components of our drum handling equipment.

The first has a large rectangular trough, with a 2200-litre capacity. We use it to polish larger items such as stacker chassis and drum lifter bodies. It also deburrs components to ensure they are smooth to the touch.

By investing in this new machine we can produce the correct quality of finish more efficiently. Previously we would aqua-blast components; this was a slower process which produced a rougher finish.

This year we also invested in a large circular bowl polishing machine. This piece of machinery has an 800-litre capacity. It’s a great piece of kit for polishing smaller items like drum catches and rotator band sections - it too deburrs components to ensure they are smooth.

The third type of polishing machine we invested in was a large circular bowl maize dryer. Again, this boasts an 800-litre capacity. It dries components once they have been polished. This ensures a shiny clean finish and allows parts to be ready to use straight away.

This may seem like a relatively simple process change, but if you’ve ever had to polish stainless steel, you’ll appreciate the upgrade. This piece of machinery prevents parts from drying with marks on them, so we’ve reduced the cleaning time. It’s these types of small seemingly insignificant improvements that we’re always looking for in our day-to-day operations. If they can improve our efficiencies while making everyone’s jobs a little more enjoyable, we think we’re on to a winner!

Why do we think it’s important to keep investing in new machinery? We manufacture the best drum lifting equipment available. Our customers choose us because we design solutions that improve their processes and ensure safer working environments. And, they know why they choose STS, they're investing in a product that’s made to last.

Don’t take our word for it though. Why not take a look at our product range and check out the videos of our drum lifting equipment and witness the quality yourself?
